Does not equal sign on keyboard2/28/2023 ![]() ![]() However, how can we denote that two things are not equal? To do so, the symbol \(\neq\) is used, and it can be printed in LaTeX with the command \neq or, more explicitly although less practical, writing \not=. It is, so to speak, the opposite or the negative form of the equality sign and yet a modification of it. This symbol is the universal = that you can find on your keyboard, and that was first introduced by Robert Recorde centuries ago. Note that the check for equality uses two equal signs. If you don not have numeric keypad, hold down the Fn and ALT keys while typing the alt code number. Tried booting in safe mode - the key worked consistently after half an hour, so am fairly. Periodically, I am able to use the equals sign for about 5-10 seconds after reboot. For Mac users, the keyboard shortcut for Not Equal to Symbol is Option . Checked the on screen keyboard after that - it did not work either. You have to use the numeric keypad of your keyboard. I did not install anything new on my computer for the last few days. Now that we have a small grasp of what equality means in mathematics, we can give this relation a symbol. Your keyboard does not have a key, so instead we use two characters in a row. To write the Not Equal To symbol on keyboard using ALT codes ALT 8800, just hold down the ALT key while typing the alt key code 8800. Although in day-to-day life we say that two things are equal when they are very similar, or when abstractly they are the same (they share the qualities that for us essentially identify that object), in the field of mathematics the equality relation has a much more strict and formal sense. ![]() In mathematics one of the most important relations between two objects is equality. ![]()
